The next threat in our stormy weather pattern is developing overnight. The Twin Cities NWS has issued a flood watch until 4 a.m. that includes the Twin Cities and much of western Wisconsin.

A band of slow-moving thunderstorms is likely to sag southward across the greater Twin Cities area overnight. You can see the latest radar images here on the MPR weather page.

The storms will likely produce heavy torrential rainfall overnight. Rainfall totals could reach 3 to 5 inches in some areas.

Remember summer storms are localized and rainfall totals can vary widely across short distances.

...FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 AM CDT FRIDAY...

* WHAT...Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.

* WHERE...Portions of Minnesota and Wisconsin, including the following areas, in Minnesota, Anoka, Carver, Chisago, Dakota, Hennepin, Isanti, Ramsey, Scott, Sherburne, Washington and Wright. In Wisconsin, Barron, Chippewa, Dunn, Eau Claire, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, Rusk and St. Croix.

* WHEN...Until 4 AM CDT Friday.

* IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of creeks, streams, urban areas, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - Training thunderstorms across eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin have the potential to produce 3 to 5 inches of rain tonight. The east to west line will slowly sag south through the evening while continuing to backbuild to the west, leading to the possibility of flash flooding.
