A soggy Christmas with icy potential north and west; little snow

A mess of a storm system is bringing rain, snow and ice to Minnesota this Christmas Day. The storm will impact Minnesota into Tuesday night. Temperatures will remain above normal also.

Christmas storm brings a variety of weather 

The wet mess continues Christmas Day. Winter weather advisories and winter storm watches are posted through much of the day Monday into Tuesday.

A variety of precipitation will fall across the state through the day Monday into Tuesday.

Of particular concern will be ice in portions of northern and far western, southwest Minnesota where temperatures are colder. There could be a large area of ice accumulation making for dangerous travel.

Christmas Day will likely break more temperature records. The record high for the Twin Cities is 51 set in 1922. We’ve already set a record high on Christmas Eve with a high of 55 (the old record was 46) an three record warm low temperatures Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Snow will fall in portions of northern and far western Minnesota as well, while the precipitation will be mainly liquid in central and southeast Minnesota into Wisconsin.

Quite a bit of rain has already fallen across central Minnesota. Over an inch has been received for many areas. The Twin Cities has received 0.64 inches through 9 a.m. Monday.

With more rain developing Monday afternoon into Monday night, many spots could receive an additional inch or more making for precipitation totals over two inches in some spots in central Minnesota.

The storm system should wrap up late Tuesday into early Wednesday. Temperatures will be cooler late in the week but still well above normal.
