Quiet weather with mild temperatures well into next week

The thick stratus clouds broke over Minneapolis Wednesday afternoon and allowed the setting sun to colorize a higher broken altocumulus deck. Lovely.

The last gasp of our messy Christmas soaker has been scattered very light snow spreading southwestward through central and southwestern Minnesota this Wednesday.

The storm has weakened and will continue a slow drift eastward. On its heels, Minnesota and western Wisconsin will experience storm-free days with rather mild temperatures for the rest of this week and well into next week as we kick off 2024.

Pleasant Thursday and Friday

Thursday will remain precipitation free for the most part. The tail end of the departing storm system might swipe the southeast corner of Minnesota such as from Winona to around La Crescent and Spring Grove with a dusting of light snow, but little if any accumulation.

High temperatures will be in the upper 20s in the northwest corner and 30s elsewhere. The Twin Cities should have a high in the upper 30 beneath mostly cloudy skies.

Friday will bring bright, sunny skies as dry high pressure will finally push our persistent low clouds off to the east. Highs will be in the upper 20s northwest and 30s for most of the spot. Some southern spots and around the Twin Cities might touch 40.

Weak cold front Saturday

A weak cold front from the northwest might scattered light snow across Minnesota on Saturday and maybe into Saturday night. Accumulations could range from nothing to around 1 inch.

Temperatures will turn cooler over the weekend, but not cold. Highs on Saturday should be from the low 20s northwest to mid 30s south. The Twin Cities’ high is forecast for about 34.

Behind the front, Sunday will be the chilliest day of the next week or so with highs from the upper teens northwest to upper 20s southeast. The Twin Cities will have a high near 29, which is a few degrees warmer than normal.
