Snow develops Friday into Saturday night. Overall temperatures will fluctuate modestly between nearly normal and above normal until late next week when it finally gets colder.

Cool, cloudy Thursday then milder Friday

Low clouds remain stubborn for much of Minnesota Thursday. In those clouds are a few flurries as well. Highs will be mostly in the 20s across the state, closer to normal highs which range from the mid teens to the mid 20s.

The big headline for our weather is that much of the state will finally see snow. In fact, some of it will be significant in northeast Minnesota and along the North Shore. Snow showers will develop Friday north and expand statewide into Saturday and Saturday night.

Several inches of snow — or even more — are possible along the North Shore and portions of northeast Minnesota. Snow totals will drop off considerably as you head west and south.

Temperatures don’t change a whole lot until late next week into next weekend (Jan. 12-14). A chunk of real cold air finally looks to dive south.

Our forecast computer models still differ on how long the cold will stick around and just how cold it will get. Here’s a sample of the variability for forecast lows early next Saturday morning, Jan. 13:

It should be noted, if we drop below zero finally in the Twin Cities, it would come about a month later than the 30 year climatological average (1991-2020).
