High pressure is building into Minnesota and bringing back sunshine. Lingering clouds south will decrease. Highs will be in the 70s. More showers are possible late Wednesday.
Monday rainfall and severe weather
Severe storms developed late Monday afternoon and spawned 12 reports of funnels or tornadoes in south-central Minnesota. The culprit for the tornadic activity was mainly two super cell thunderstorms that developed and interacted with a warm frontal boundary.
In addition to the severe storms, heavy rain fell across much of central Minnesota into western Wisconsin. A swath of 2 to 4 inches fell from Alexandria through St. Cloud and the northern half of the Twin Cities metro area into western Wisconsin. One of the highest values was in Alexandria which received 4.11 inches.
Sunshine breaks out Tuesday with more showers late Wednesday
High pressure is settling into Minnesota for Tuesday, bringing sunshine and pleasant conditions. Lingering clouds in southern Minnesota will decrease. Afternoon high temperatures will be mostly in the 70s.
Cloud cover increases Wednesday as the next disturbance moves in, bringing another chance of showers in western Minnesota Wednesday afternoon and statewide overnight Wednesday. Rainfall with this event looks generally light.
Rainfall with this next system will be considerably lighter than what many experienced Monday. Most rainfall will be under one-half inch.
Below normal but comfortable temperatures and dew points prevail the rest of the week with highs mostly in the 70s. Northern Minnesota will see some highs in the upper 60s. Overnight lows will range from the upper 40s to the upper 50s.
