The ups and downs of Minnesota’s weather this week rivaled the ups and downs of rides at the Mighty Midway at the State Fair.

Overall, it’s been a wet August, with above-average rainfall totals across much of the state. The hottest day of the month was Monday. The heat indexes on that day peaked between 101 and 115 degrees and coincided with an attendance slump at the Minnesota State Fair. Severe thunderstorms led to an unprecedented late start to the fair on Tuesday morning.

“Monday overall of this week was probably the most memorable day of the entire month of August,” said meteorologist and climatologist Mark Seeley. “Monday into Tuesday of this week was pretty traumatic.”

The good news — a seasonal, beautiful weekend is on tap. Seeley broke down just how damaging the end-of-month storms were and other records set this month in his weekly weather chat with Morning Edition host Cathy Wurzer.
