Breezy, northwesterly winds are ushering in a fall-like air mass to end our work week. These cooler temperatures will last through Saturday. Friday’s high temperatures will warm into the 60s across the state, with some upper 50s expected for the Arrowhead region.

Some instability presents itself on Friday that could lead to scattered rain showers, mainly east of Interstate 35 into western Wisconsin.

High pressure overhead will provide clear skies and light winds. We could awake Saturday morning to some of the coldest temperatures since late May. Look for highs in the lower to mid-40s across the state, with mid to upper 30s expected for northeastern Minnesota. Frost advisories may be issued for the northland.

Saturday and Sunday look very pleasant with quiet conditions and plenty of sunshine. Saturday will see cooler highs in the mid to upper 60s. On Sunday, highs return to the mid to upper 70s. The Minnesota River Valley could see some low 80s on Sunday.

Warmer temps with few precipitation chances

The trend in the forecast looks promising for those wanting the return of summer. Long-range forecast trends are calling for above-average temperatures and below-average precipitation. Highs in the 80s are possible well into middle of September.

Coolest Twin Cities summer in 9 years

With meteorological summer behind us, we can take a look at the statistics from the National Weather Service on how comparable our summer was to previous records.

It was no surprise that our summer was wetter than normal, but our temperatures came in right around average. It was the coolest summer in nine years for the Twin Cities.
