Authorities have identified the Minneapolis police officer who shot and injured a man Saturday. The man was allegedly firing a gun in an apartment building.

The incident started just before 4:30 a.m. Saturday. Neighbors called police to report sounds of gunshots and glass shattering at a building near Minnehaha Avenue and East 41st Street.

Police responded and located a 40-year-old man in a stairwell. Police say he was holding an AK-47. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, in an update on Monday, said Minneapolis police Sgt. Ben Bauer fired his rifle and struck the man.

The man was treated on the scene and transported to a hospital, where he remained in stable condition as of Monday afternoon. He is expected to survive. The man has not yet been charged in connection with the incident.

Authorities evacuated the building during the incident, and no one else was physically hurt. But neighbors said they were shaken by the shooting.

At a city council meeting Monday, Council Member Aurin Chowdhury, who represents the area, said she’s looking for trauma support resources for people in the neighborhood.

“That was a really scary situation for the residents in that area, particularly the residents in that building,” Chowdhury said. “I’m deeply grateful for the first responders that showed up.”

Bauer remains on critical incident leave.
