Twenty-one students were injured and 12 taken to the hospital in Hibbing on Thursday morning after a school bus they were riding in was struck by another vehicle. Officials said the students’ injuries are not considered life threatening.

St. Louis County Schools officials confirmed a Cherry school bus was hit by the car they say went through a stop sign. The bus driver and the driver of the other vehicle, a 2006 Toyota RAV4, also were injured and taken to the hospital.

The crash occurred around 7:30 a.m. and law enforcement reported that the bus had rolled at the intersection of Highway 5 and Townline Road in St. Louis County.

The St. Louis County school district is the biggest in the state by area. Some students spend up to an hour on the bus to school every day.

“The kids are pre-K to 12th grade at that school and on the bus,” district superintendent Reggie Engebritson said.

“They were halfway through the bus route, partway through the bus route. I have additional counselors and school social workers at the school providing support for students and staff there,” Engebritson said.

The State Patrol is investigating.
