September had the warmest statewide average temperature in recorded history for Minnesota weather. According to meteorologist and climatologist Mark Seeley, the state reached an average over 64 degrees Fahrenheit. The last time September in Minnesota was nearly that warm was in 2015.

While most climate stations around the state reported averages from 5 degrees to 8 degrees above normal, counties in northwestern to north-central Minnesota were seeing temperatures reaching 9 degrees above the average. Additionally, for the month of September, much of the state received less than a quarter-inch of rainfall.

MPR News host Cathy Wurzer spoke with Seeley about the dry and warm conclusion to September during their weekly weather chat.
