Fire weather watch for western Minnesota; roller coaster temps the next few days

Wednesday will be warm and windy with critical fire weather conditions again. Temperatures dip Thursday and Friday before warming back up Saturday.

Warm, windy Wednesday ahead of another cool front 

After a brief cool day that was finally near normal, we’re back to summerlike temperatures Wednesday afternoon. Highs will be near 80 degrees in southern Minnesota with cooler readings north. These readings are nearly 15 degrees above normal once again.

It will be windy again with south winds 10 to 20 mph and critically low relative humidity values reaching 10 to 25 percent by Wednesday afternoon. Expect critical fire weather conditions again in the afternoon with the dry, windy and warm conditions.

A cool front slides through again late Wednesday, dropping temperatures for Thursday and Friday back into the 60s to low 70s.

The cool Thursday will set us up for a chilly Thursday night. It could be the coolest night in 5 months for many. Frost will be potentially widespread in northern Minnesota.

Temperatures will warm up yet again for Saturday, potentially to near 80 degrees in southern Minnesota. It could also be another critical fire weather day with windy, dry conditions.

Another cool front moves in late Saturday, potentially touching off the only spotty chance of rain in the next 7 days. With a lack of moisture and timing of the front, the best chance appears to be in far northeast Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Whatever rain does fall, will be very modest however. Most models drop little rain, but the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts model is the most aggressive dropping one-quarter to one-half inch in a few lucky spots in northeastern Minnesota.
