Dry streak coming to an end

Aug. 29 was the last time Minneapolis-St. Paul recorded over 0.25 inches of precipitation, 0.37 inches to be exact. For the entire month of September, only 0.06 inches of rain fell, and so far in October, only trace amounts have been recorded.

2019 holds the record for the wettest year at 39.06 inches. 2024 started off strong in terms of recorded precipitation, leading many to believe it might rank among the highest for total rainfall. As you can see from the chart below, after late August, our precipitation completely flatlined. As of right now 2024 is ranked 18th out of 154 years.

Thursday's cold front is set to bring promising, widespread showers to areas beyond northern Minnesota. While many previous weather systems have skimmed the international border with Canada, this front will move in from the Dakotas, delivering rain to central and southern Minnesota. There’s enough instability that we might even hear a few rumbles of thunder.
