Big weekend warmup with light snow north

Warmer air is moving in Friday, making for a mild weekend. Light snow showers move through northern Minnesota Friday and Saturday. We’re also monitoring a storm system for Monday. 

Very mild weekend on the way; some snow showers north 

After a cold 48 hours, temperatures begin their rebound Friday. Highs will be mostly in the 20s with low to mid-30s in southwestern Minnesota. Northern Minnesota will be mostly cloudy while we’ll see some sun south.

Anomalous warmth is surging back into Minnesota Friday and into the weekend, bringing temperatures that will be 10 or more degrees above normal Saturday and Sunday.

A winter weather advisory goes into effect at midnight tonight through 3 p.m. Saturday for portions of northeastern Minnesota.

This advancing warmth plus a couple of upper level disturbances is touching off some snow showers Friday morning in northern Minnesota and will again on Saturday. 

The moisture Friday night into Saturday could come in the form of a wintry mix of light freezing rain and snow for northeastern Minnesota.

Up to a few inches of fresh snow are possible deep into the Arrowhead near Grand Portage Friday into Saturday with less south and west.

In addition, many areas in northeastern Minnesota could see light ice accumulations Friday night into Saturday as warm air aloft moves over relatively cold, subfreezing surface conditions.

High temperatures Saturday and Sunday will be in the 40s across southern Minnesota. It will be slightly cooler, in the 30s north, where there’s snow pack.

A storm system looks likely to develop late Sunday into Monday and Tuesday. Right now, it looks like the bulk of the moisture will stay across northern Minnesota and points east of the Twin Cities and central and southern Minnesota.

The snow pack could deepen up north where many areas already have several or more inches on the ground.

Most moisture and snowfall will be confined to northern Minnesota late Sunday into Monday and Tuesday. Significant snowfall is possible for far northern Minnesota.

Behind the storm system, everyone will receive cold air mid to late next week. Highs will return to the teens and 20s with frigid wind chills again.
