Chilly winter solstice
Our winter weather on Thursday arrived just ahead of the winter solstice, which will occur on Saturday at 3:21 a.m. This will mark the end of our shorter days and longer nights.
With Canadian high pressure overhead, below-average temperatures will persist. Highs on Saturday will reach the teens in central and northern Minnesota, and the 20s in the south.
Winds will begin transitioning out of the south-southeast at 5 to 10 mph, with northwestern Minnesota experiencing winds ranging from 5 to 15 mph. These southerly winds will bring warmer temperatures for Sunday, with above-freezing highs expected in southern Minnesota.
Looking ahead to a busy travel and holiday week, the only weather system on the horizon is late Sunday night into Monday. Another clipper system will bring several inches of snow, primarily to northern Minnesota, with northeastern Minnesota, near Grand Marais, expected to receive the most, totaling 2 to 3 inches.
Temperatures remain mild in the 30s next week for the holiday.
Daily high temperatures will run anywhere from 5 to 15 degrees above our seasonal average.
