What to know about Minnesota’s public transportation schedules and fares on New Year's Eve, Day

If you’re planning to use public transportation on New Year’s Eve in the metro area, it’s important to note that Metro Transit will not be providing free rides. This is a change from previous years due to lack of sponsorship, according to the organization.

All-day passes ranging from $2-5.00 are available for purchase. They can be used from the point of sale until 2 a.m. the next day. Special rides and services on the Blue and Green lines will be offered starting at 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 1.

More information about holiday bus schedules can be found on Metro Transit’s website.  

However, if you’re in the suburbs of Minneapolis, the Metro Valley Transit Authority (MVTA) will be offering free rides on New Year’s Eve after 6 p.m. on fixed bus routes. 

Riders must download the RideMVTA App to redeem their free ride.  

Suburbs MVTA covers include: 

  • Dakota County: Apply Valley, Burnsville, Eagan and Rosemount 

  • Scott County: Savage, Prior Lake and Shakopee 

Across the state, public transportation services are operating based on community demand and needs. Here are some cities with New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day plans of operation:  

  • Duluth: Duluth Transit Authority operates on holiday bus schedules on New Year's Day. Specific route times can be found on the Routes and Schedule’s page. 

  • St. Cloud: Metro Bus operates regular weekday service on New Year’s Eve, no service on New Year’s Day.  

  • Rochester: Rochester Public Transit operates from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on both days. 

  • Fargo-Moorhead: MATBUS service operates regular weekday service on New Year’s Eve, no service on fixed routes and paratransit on New Year’s Day.
