Well at least there’s finally snow in the forecast.

A low-pressure system will cross Minnesota this weekend. It will produce heavy snow for the North Shore and significant snow for much of northern Minnesota. The Twin Cities will ride the less snowy southern edge of the storm.

Let’s break down the system, snowfall coverage, timing, and likely snowfall totals.

The system

A moderately strong low pressure wave will slide from this Dakotas into Minnesota on Saturday. Snow will develop in western Minnesota by Saturday morning. The snow will spread east into the Twin Cities by late morning through midday.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Global Forecast System model tracks the system on Saturday:

Snowfall totals

The heaviest snowfall rates will occur north of the Twin Cities.

Southeast winds off Lake Superior will add moisture and terrain-enhanced snowfall to dump heavier snowfall totals along the North Shore.

A swath of 5 to 10 inches is likely along and on the higher terrain above the North Shore by Sunday. Much of northern Minnesota will see 2 to 5 inches by Sunday.
