Widespread rain transitions to freezing rain, sleet and snow

The recent spring storm is expected to bring rain, freezing rain, and snow to parts of Minnesota. A messy transition will take place late Saturday night into Sunday morning, with snow accumulation possible by Sunday afternoon. Breezy winds will persist throughout the weekend, with gusts exceeding 20 mph.

Winter weather advisory

A winter weather advisory will go into effect Saturday night across the state, spanning from the southwest corner to the northeast.

The computer models show the widespread rain showers transitioning over to freezing rain late Saturday night, and then snow continuing through Sunday morning.

The latest snow totals indicate that western and central Minnesota will receive between 1 to 4 inches, with some areas seeing even more of wet, slushy snow.

Due to the messy transition, there is a potential for a few hundredths of an inch of ice. This amount could create slippery travel conditions.

Saturday night, low temperatures will drop to around freezing in the metro area, the low 30s in the southeast, the lower 20s in the north, and the upper 20s in central and western Minnesota. With temperatures hovering below freezing, this will bring the potential for freezing rain and sleet.
