Minneapolis police say they believe a man who fatally shot two of his cousins on Monday afternoon on the city’s north side was later fatally shot in a confrontation with police in Brooklyn Center. 

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the 23-year-old man, who has not yet been identified, was released Monday from jail on bond after being arrested last week on warrants including fleeing police and possessing a firearm with a switch that converts it to a machine gun. 

O’Hara said the man went to a relative’s home in north Minneapolis in the late afternoon, where he fatally shot a 14-year-old boy and 23-year-old man, whom police believe were his cousins. Neither victim has been identified.   

“The suspect fled the scene, and we believe that is the same person who got into a shooting with police in Brooklyn Center,” O’Hara said. 

Brooklyn Center police said they were called to businesses on Brooklyn Boulevard shortly before 4 p.m. after reports of a man waving a gun. Police said that “gunfire was exchanged” and the man was struck. 

Police say officers provided first aid before the man was transported to a hospital, where he was declared dead. Police said no officers were injured. Police say the Brooklyn Center officers involved in the shooting were wearing body cameras, and have been put on leave. 

Civil rights attorney and activist Nekima Levy Armstrong was running an errand in the area when she heard what sounded like more than a dozen gunshots. 

“As I ducked down by my vehicle, I saw a person running, then I saw them fall down in the snow,” Levy Armstrong said. 

Brooklyn Center Mayor April Graves said in a Facebook statement that the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the officer-involved shooting. 

“As the investigation unfolds, I ask for your patience,” Graves said. “It is important that the process be thorough, independent and guided by facts.”
