On Feb. 7, 1976, Cecil Newman passed away. Newman was the founder of two iconic Black newspapers — the Minneapolis Spokesman and the St. Paul Recorder — which still live on today as the Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder. He was also a community leader who won civil rights victories and had the ears of local and national leaders.
To commemorate Newman’s passing, we’re revisiting a report from a former MPR staffer Kate Williams, who reported from the scene of Newman’s funeral in February 1976. In this tape from the MPR Archive, you’ll hear the voices of Hubert Humphrey and Walter Mondale, among others.
