Having someone who understands you and is invested in your future can make a huge difference at any age. But having a meaningful mentoring relationship when you’re young can be especially powerful.
People who have at least one mentor in their childhood or teenage years are more likely to report positive mental health in adulthood. Having a mentor is also linked to being involved in your community and taking leadership positions later in life.
MPR News host Angela Davis talks about how to be a mentor, find a mentor and what good mentoring looks like for all ages.
Guests:
Sarah Schaefer is the executive director of MENTOR Minnesota, a nonprofit organization that provides training and other resources for more than 200 mentoring and youth development organizations across Minnesota.
Pat Sukhum has been CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters Twin Cities since 2021. He became a Big Brother in 1998.
Rica Rivera is a youth engagement coordinator with MENTOR Minnesota and a longtime youth worker with the Division of Indian Work.
