Meet Tom Scheck

Tom Scheck is deputy managing editor of investigations at APM Reports, managing a team of talented investigative journalists. He also provides editorial guidance to MPR News and teaches data journalism at the University of Minnesota's Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Before his current role, Tom was an investigative correspondent for APM Reports, a political reporter with MPR News and a general assignment reporter with Indiana Public Radio. Tom cares deeply about the media industry and teaching journalism to the next generation of journalists.

His reporting on mismanagement and allegations of maltreatment at a northern Minnesota juvenile treatment center led to the facility’s closure. He also contributed to a story that revealed that administrators within the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency downplayed a controversial study on hydraulic fracking on water quality. He also revealed that a COVID-19 testing company cut corners to make money during the pandemic.

Tom’s contributions and work have won several awards for his work including a Peabody Award, an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award, and a regional Edward R. Murrow Award for his contributions to “Betrayed by Silence,” an MPR News investigation into the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.

Tom graduated with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism with a double major in English textual studies from Syracuse University. He loves to stay active, whether it's playing golf, working out, riding his bike, going for a walk with his partner and dog, or practicing martial arts.

His favorite place in Minnesota is the Stony River near McDougal Lake. You find Tom Scheck on LinkedIn, Threads or on his website.
