National Guard soldiers from eight states will be in Minnesota next week to test their skiing and shooting skills. The Guard sponsors regional biathlon competitions for guard teams from across the country. Winning brings bragging rights for the Guard teams, as well as the chance to compete against national teams around the world.

The Coast Guard Cutter Alder is stationed in Duluth to cut through the ice and keep shipping channels open. The 2,000-ton boat can ram through ice that's 3 feet thick, and leave a trail of open water even in the depth of a Duluth winter.

The Ice Castle outside the Mall of America opens to the public on New Year's Eve, Monday, Dec. 31, 2012. A preview was held Sunday evening for the structure, created by Ice Castles LLC, a company that builds ice castles using icicles that are grown, then fused together to make a series of walls, archways and tunnels. Work on the structure began Dec. 1 and will continue over the next three weeks. It will stand more than 40 feet tall at its peak.

Adrian Peterson's remarkable comeback season now has a magic number to punctuate it. He became the seventh player to rush for 2,000 yards in a season, plowing through the Green Bay Packers for a 20-yard gain that put him over the top in the third quarter Sunday.
