Gov. Tim Walz on Thursday laid out his timeline for ending COVID-19 restrictions — including the end of curbs in time for Memorial Day weekend — serving notice that the pandemic’s end is near. The attorney for Derek Chauvin filed a motion Tuesday seeking a new trial for the former Minneapolis police officer, who was convicted of murder last month in the death of George Floyd. The motion cites 10 reasons Chauvin should be granted a new trial, including judicial abuse of discretion over granting a change of venue and sequestering the jury before deliberations. Police accountability legislation continues to be a contentious part of budget negotiations. St. Paul city leaders spoke out Sunday after seven people were injured and dozens of gunshots fired in at least three incidents Saturday night and Sunday morning. Public health leaders continue to urge Minnesotans to keep their guard up during proms, graduations and other spring events to protect against spreading the disease, noting that more contagious COVID-19 variants are driving new cases across the state.
