Minnesota health officials reported 139 more COVID-19 deaths over the weekend as the overall pandemic death toll in the state is poised to surpass 4,000. A bankruptcy court has approved a reorganization plan for the Catholic Diocese of St. Cloud to settle legal claims of clergy abuse survivors. The Minnesota State High School League voted Thursday to continue youth sports after Gov. Walz’s restrictions expire on Dec. 18. If Walz extends his order, the season will start on Jan. 4 or later. A handful of Minneapolis businesses established a fund they hope would help avoid cuts to the city’s police department. The announcement Thursday came as the city council began discussing whether to approve an amendment that would move nearly $8 million from next year’s police budget to other programs designed to reduce officers’ workload. In a press conference Tuesday, St. Paul Police Chief Todd Axtell said a shooting involving officers on the city's north end last weekend did not measure up to department standards. The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said in a statement later Tuesday that Officer Anthony Dean shot and wounded Joseph Javonte Washington, 31, of Lakeville, who was wanted in connection with an earlier domestic incident.
