State health officials on Friday made clear that Minnesota may need to dial back reopening efforts on bars, restaurants and other public gathering spaces if current COVID-19 case trends accelerate and the state continues backsliding in its fight against the disease’s spread. Minnesota's unemployment rate dropped last month as more businesses and restaurants began to reopen following the end of the stay-at-home order. The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development reported that the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped to 8.6 percent in June, down from a record high of 9.9 percent in May. Police body camera footage of George Floyd’s final minutes of life shows him telling Minneapolis police officers that he’s claustrophobic and pleading with them not to put him in the back of a squad car. Aiming to prevent a further spike in homelessness resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, Gov. Tim Walz announced Tuesday that the state will offer up to $100 million in housing assistance to help homeowners and renters.
