Sports

Should sports be separated from schools?

A bill before the Legislature this session would take public schools out of the sports business. For that matter it would take debate, one-act play and band competitions away from the schools and put them, along with athletics, under the control of city park and recreation departments or their equivalents. Critics worry that the bill would decrease participation in extracurricular activities, or, worse, lead kids to drop out of school.

Facing NFL scrutiny

The NFL Finance Committee will meet Wednesday to hear from its staff attorneys and investigators about Arizona businessman Reggie Fowler. Fowler has signed a purchase agreement to buy the Minnesota Vikings for about $625 million. Now the deal is awaiting NFL approval. MPR's Cathy Wurzer spoke with Wheelock Whitney who was one of ten owners of the Vikings before the team was sold to current owner Red McCombs.

Despite loss of Moss, life goes on for Vikes' fans

The impending trade of Vikings wide receiver Randy Moss to the Oakland Raiders is causing a buzz with Vikings fans and, no doubt, with football fans around the country. Some are shocked that the Vikings would trade a player who, statistically, is one of the best wide receivers to ever play the game. Others are not surprised. They say Moss' controversial behavior was a drain on the team and they welcome the trade.

LaRussa confronts Canseco's "Juiced" claims

Former Oakland A's outfielder Jose Canseco created quite a stir recently with his book, "Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits and How Baseball Got Big," claiming he used steroids with several of his former teammates.
