A Capitol photographer

Gov. Perpich
Gov. Rudy Perpich was one of photographer Tom Olmscheid's favorite subjects because he was willing to express his emotions. Here, Perpich expresses his glee at receiving the Norwegian Star at a ceremony in 1989.

Olmscheid has been the official photographer of the Minnesota House of Representatives since 1977.

From the majestic dome to mundane committee hearings, he has photographed the building -- and its occupants -- in every light you can imagine. His photos so often capture a surprising beauty in the place, and a surprising degree of humanity in the politicians.

Tom Olmschied's photos are on display now in a joint show with his son, A.J. It's called "Olmscheid House and Street" and it runs through Oct. 5 at the IFP Minnesota Center for Media Arts, on University Avenue in St. Paul.

Photographer Tom Olmschied joined All Things Considered host Tom Crann in the studio to talk about some of his work.
