Preliminary state traffic crash reports indicate this Thanksgiving travel period was one of the least deadly on record.
Only Washington County reported a traffic death between Wednesday and Sunday. Dennis Smith, with the state department of public safety, says, "In recent years, it would not be unusual to have 10 or up to a dozen deaths in a single weekend during this holiday period. So, we've seen a dramatic reduction in traffic fatalities over this holiday."
In the last three years over the Thanksgiving holiday, 32 motorists were killed in Minnesota - making it the deadliest holiday for travel.
Smith says law enforcement made 55 DWI arrests on the night before Thanksgiving in the Twin Cities metro area, historically one of the busiest nights for impaired driving. A similar effort last year generated 49 DWIs.
Smith says arrest totals are still be compiled in Greater Minnesota.
