Federal lawmakers from Wisconsin and Minnesota plan to introduce a bill that would allow people to register to vote on the same day as a federal election.
Congressman Keith Ellison is one of the bill's sponsors. He says same-day registration would make voting easier and also encourage more people to vote.
"In Minnesota, we've been doing this for many, many years. It's been going really well. We have the highest voter turn out in the country. We have almost no fraud. I've never heard of a proven case. And we have a very active and civically-engaged community because people can participate" Ellison said.
Eight states, including Minnesota, already have Election Day Registration laws.
The federal legislation comes days after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld an Indiana law requiring voters to show ID at the polls.
