The Minnesota Health Department has revised its fish consumption advisory.
The department used to advise people to strictly follow its once-per-week or once-per-month recommendations. But research scientist Pat McCann says that's changing.
"We re-did our analysis and it showed that people could safely eat one-meal-a-month fish, and then also eat fish from the two-meals-a-week and or the one-meal-a-week category and still be safe," McCann said.
McCann said this year's guide has an advisory format that is more understandable for consumers.
This year's data also includes information on perfluorooctane sulfonate, or PFOS, in fish from 33 metro area lakes and the Mississippi River.
No new contaminants have been added to the advisory.
