The number of people looking for work in Minnesota continues to grow. More than 171,000 people are now unemployed in the state. That's 40,000 more people than a year ago. Minnesota's unemployment rate is 5.8 percent.

This is only the fifth time ever that the state's unemployment rate has come in higher than the nation's, which is now 5.7 percent. More than half the job losses in Minnesota occured in the manufacturing and construction industries.

Minnesota Public Radio's Cathy Wurzer turned to two Minnesotans for their perspectives on the job losses.

Todd Bjerstedt is a a builder in the Twin Cities area. Tony Deos lives in Minneapolis and works in public relations and communications for the Target Corp.
