The president of St. John's University in Collegeville is retiring for health reasons.
Brother Dietrich Reinhart was recently diagnosed with cancer in both lungs and his brain. The metastatic melanoma was discovered during a physical at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Reinhart says he's retiring to focus on his health.
In a letter to the chair of the college's board of regents, Reinhart said the situation is "impossible, but not hopeless."
Reinhart's resignation will take effect once an interim president is named, then the college will initiate the search for a new president.
Reinhart has been president of St. John's since 1991. He graduated from St. John's in 1971 with a degree in history, and became a Benedictine monk at St John's Abbey in 1972.
