U of M imposes hiring 'pause'

The University of Minnesota system has implemented a "pause" in hiring.

University of Minnesota President Robert Bruininks says the move is not a hiring freeze, but rather a hiring pause. He says the move is necessary to control costs during uncertain economic times.

Bruininks says open positions will be filled only if they're deemed necessary. He says university managers are being encouraged to reassign duties or reorganize departments to fill open positions.

Bruininks calls the move temporary, but says it's needed because of the tough economy, and as a way to control costs "sooner rather than later".

The pause in hiring will not affect part-time student workers.
