Minnesota Twins officials are discounting a published report that the team has agreed to a new long-term contract with American League MVP Joe Mauer.
WCCO-TV is reporting that Mauer, a St. Paul native, has agreed to deal to remain with the Twins for another 10 years.
But a Twins spokesman tells MPR that a deal between the 26-year-old star catcher and the Twins has not been signed. He said the team officials are not expecting to make any major announcements Monday.
The spokesman said any details of the negotiations are between Mauer, his agent and Twins officials.
ESPN is reporting that multiple sources tell the network that the story is not true.
Mauer is in the final year of his current contract, which will pay him $12.5 million. He will be a free agent after the 2010 season if he doesn't re-sign with the Twins.
