Michigan wants the U.S. Supreme Court to reconsider its refusal to close Chicago-area shipping locks in hopes of keeping Asian carp out of the Great Lakes.
State Attorney General Mike Cox filed a motion Thursday with the high court, which denied Michigan's request Jan. 19. Hours later, federal officials revealed that genetic material from the invasive carp had been detected in Lake Michigan for the first time.
Cox says the government knew about the discovery three days earlier but didn't inform the court until after it ruled.
His motion also challenges shippers' claim that closing the locks even temporarily would damage the Chicago-area economy.
Scientists say if the carp become established in the lakes, they could devastate the $7 billion fishing industry.
