IP candidate for gov proposes riverboat casinos

One of the Independence Party candidates for governor is proposing the state open six riverboat casinos to help the state's budget problem.

Rob Hahn said he'd like to build the riverboat casinos in several cities including the Twin Cities, Red Wing, Wabasha, Winona and La Crescent.

Hahn says the casinos would generate as much as $600 million for the state.

"I think the key here is we hear so much criticism, or at least I have as I traveled around, about cuts to education, cuts to LGA," Hahn said. "Well here's an answer. Here's a possible solution. This is something that will generate fresh revenues specifically that have been cut."

Creating the casinos could be a difficult task in the Legislature. Gov. Tim Pawlenty failed in his efforts to bring slot machines to the Canterbury Park Horse Track a few years ago. Hahn is seeking the Independence Party nomination and is running against endorsed candidate Tom Horner.
