It's August in Minnesota, and it's hot, humid and uncomfortable.

That's having an effect on everyone working outside. The Vikings are monitoring the hear in Mankato during training camp. Firefighters have been taking more precautions because of the heat. At a fire in Saint Paul, 78 firefighters were needed yesterday to control a blaze that would normally be a job for 50. And a firefighter in Duluth is still hospitalized after working in the heat over the weekend.

Today's wet weather has helped beat the heat that's been oppressing Minnesotans for the last few days. But the heat wave continues in other parts of the country. In the southern plains to the Ohio valley, temperatures reached into the 100s again today.

Dr. Jon Hallberg is our regular medical analyst here on ATC. We talked to him about why heat is so hard on the body.
