Lee's supporters celebrate prison release

Supporters of Koua Fong Lee gathered at a Twin Cities area park to celebrate his release from prison following his petition for a new trial in a fatal Toyota crash.

Some who gathered at North Hazelwood Park in Maplewood Sunday met Lee for the first time since his release in early August. One was Andrew Gwynn of Los Angeles. The Rochester native started the "Free Koua Fong Lee" Facebook page that attracted thousands of supporters. The 30-year-old Gwynn told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that it felt "surreal" to be a part of something so momentous.

Lee was sent to prison in 2007 after his Camry crashed into another car in St. Paul and killed three people. Lee insisted he couldn't stop the car. A judge granted his petition for a new trial after Toyota's acceleration problems gained attention. Prosecutors declined to retry him.
