Dayton refutes GOP claim of evading state income taxes

DFL gubernatorial candidate Mark Dayton said the Minnesota Republican Party is trying to distract the public from their candidate's lack of a budget plan.
Dayton issued the statement Wednesday after Republican Party Chair Tony Sutton accused Dayton of avoiding state income taxes with trust funds located outside of the state. He pointed to the former Senator's federal disclosure forms to show Dayton had family trusts in South Dakota, the Cayman Islands and the British Virgin Islands.
"He has been very clear. 'I'm going to raise taxes on households that make more than $150,000,' Sutton said. "If that's the case, Mr. Dayton, then why is it you parked your money, or your money is parked outside of Minnesota?"
Dayton said the GOP is relying on outdated information, and he said he has no current offshore holdings. Dayton has released his income tax forms from last year. Republican nominee Tom Emmer and Independence Party candidate Tom Horner have refused to release theirs.
