Word of a potential breakthrough in Minnesota's budget stalemate is reviving hopes for backers of a Minnesota Vikings football stadium deal.

The team is scheduled to start its new season in the Metrodome next month. The team's Metrodome lease expires next year, and the Vikings have struck a deal with Ramsey County to build a $1 billion stadium in Arden Hills. That deal stalled in talks with the state about its contribution.

But Ramsey County Commissioner Tony Bennett says he thinks a final deal could be ready for a special session in coming days.

"As we've said before, the budget came first. If the budget is put together and everything is done, I think a Vikings agreement could be put together very quickly," said Bennett. "We weren't that far apart before, and where there's a will, there's a way."

The Vikings and sponsors of the stadium bill at the Capitol didn't respond to questions about whether they thought a deal was ready. But Gov. Mark Dayton said today he's open to a deal as part of a special session.
