Voters in two Minneapolis legislative districts will go to the polls on Tuesday for special elections.
The election in Senate District 59 will fill the vacancy created by the departure of longtime DFL Sen. Larry Pogemiller, who was recently appointed by Gov. Mark Dayton to direct the Office of Higher Education. Pogemiller served nine terms in the Senate representing northeast Minneapolis.
The candidates trying to replace Pogemiller are DFLer Kari Dziedzic and Republican Ben Schwanke.
The vacancy in House District 61B in south-central Minneapolis, came last fall when state Rep. Jeff Hayden was elected to the state Senate in a special election. The candidates there are DFLer Susan Allen and independent Nathan Blumenshine.
The polls in both districts are open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.
