The University of Minnesota officially began its search for a new athletic director Tuesday.
University President Eric Kaler said four people on the search committee will work with a 21-person advisory group, as well as a private headhunting firm.
The new athletic director will oversee the university's 25 sports teams and will replace Joel Maturi, who announced his retirement earlier this month.
Maturi plans to step down when his contract ends June 30, and Kaler said he hopes to have the new athletic director start work the next day.
Kaler said he wants to choose finalists by late April and make the hire in early May.
Both the search and advisory panels are co-chaired by Vice President for Research Tim Mulcahy and Mary Jo Kane, who heads the Tucker Center for Research on Girls and Women in Sport.
