Moose collared for study in Voyageurs park

Wildlife officials at Voyageurs National Park have captured and collared six moose to study the impact of climate change on the animals.

That brings the total number of moose in the park wearing GPS collars to 18.

Steve Windels, a wildlife biologist at the park, said there's also a new timber wolf study under way but the unusually warm winter hindered that effort.

"When your doing an aerial capture of wolves you really need fresh snow to be able to locate where the packs are," Windels said. "And because of that we weren't able to capture and collar any wolves."

Park biologists plan to put GPS collars on three wolves later this year using live traps. Windels said there are an estimated 50 moose, and between 30 and 50 wolves inside the park boundaries.
