Groups backing same-sex marriage say they have gathered more than 80,000 signatures on petitions supporting General Mills.
The food manufacturer is speaking out against a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage in the state.
Petitions from the Human Rights Campaign and Minnesotans United for all Families thank General Mills for its position on the amendment. Their petition does not specifically ask consumers to buy the cereal giant's products, though a spokesman for the Human Rights Campaign said it encourages people to support General Mills "by whatever means possible."
Meanwhile, a group opposing same sex marriage is waging a boycott of General Mills' products. The National Organization for Marriage says it has gathered roughly 18,000 signatures to a petition that chastises General Mills for wading into the debate.
The ballot measure in question goes before Minnesota voters in November.
