The roommate of a St. Paul man charged with killing his wife told police he heard nothing unusual on the night of the alleged murder.
A new court document says police investigating the killing of Kira Steger made "numerous attempts" to challenge the roommate's story as they build their case against her husband Jeffrey Trevino. But police have "found no evidence to contradict" the roommate's claims.
According to the amended complaint, the roommate told police he saw Steger and Trevino together on the night of the alleged murder at the home the three of them rented in St. Paul. Investigators found large amounts of blood in the home, as well as signs of a massive cleanup effort. Some of the blood belonged to Steger, some to Trevino, and some came back unidentifiable.
The roommate, who is identified only by his initials, M.R., has "denied hearing anything or any involvement in the disappearance or murder."
Steger's body was pulled from the Mississippi River last week, more than two months after she disappeared.
Trevino has pleaded not guilty to two counts of second-degree murder.
