A second Republican plans to challenge U.S. Rep. Tim Walz, D-Mankato, in next year's election.

Aaron Miller, of Byron, Minn., said wants to go to Washington to tackle the nation's spending problem. An Army veteran, Miller, 44, works for a biotechnology firm.

If elected,  Miller said he will work to cut spending in Washington and otherwise reduce the scope of the federal government.

"We're past passing our debt on to our children, we're passing it on to their children and to theirs, and the government spending needs to be reigned in," Miller said in a telephone interview with MPR News.

Last month, State Rep. Mike Benson, R-Rochester, announced his campaign for the 1st District Congressional seat. Benson is not pledging to abide by the GOP endorsement.

Miller does plan to defer to the party's choice. That means he has  ruled out a primary campaign if he fails to win the endorsement.
