The National Republican Congressional Committee says it's spending $24,000 to air a television ad in the Duluth market accusing Democratic U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan of voting against veterans.

Nolan spokesman Steve Johnson said Nolan voted against the Department of Veterans Affairs funding bill in June because it underfunded health care, job training and other programs for veterans and instead spent billions of dollars on unnecessary military weapons and programs.

Eighth District voters elected Nolan last year over first-term Republican incumbent Chip Cravaack.  Nolan previously served three consecutive  terms in the U.S. House beginning in the mid-1970s.

Republican Stewart Mills, whose family owns  the Mills Fleet Farm chain,  hopes to run against Nolan in the 2014 election.
