Stewart Mills, who is running as a Republican for Congress in Minnesota's 8th District, raised a bit more than $205,000 in the final quarter of 2013.
That brings his total fundraising to nearly $450,000 since he got into the race against U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan, a Democrat.
Mills, who has never before run for elective office, is a member of the family that owns the Mills Fleet Farm chain of stores.
“The overwhelming support I've received for my campaign has been humbling,” said Mills in a press statement. “As I spend time on the campaign trail, I am greeted by countless Minnesotans who share my desire to create jobs right here in Minnesota and are tired of the overreaching policies coming from bureaucrats in Washington, DC.”
Mills said that 95 percent of his donors are from Minnesota.
The Nolan campaign has not yet released its year-end fundraising numbers, which are required to be reported to the Federal Election Commission by the end of the month. In the three-month fundraising period that ended in September, Nolan led Mills in campaign cash-on-hand with $261,059, compared to $234,442 for Mills.
The race for Congress in the 8th District is expected to be hard fought this fall. Nolan defeated first-term Republican Rep. Chip Cravaack in 2012 following Cravaack's 2010 defeat of longtime Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar. Nolan previously served three consecutive terms in the House ending in 1981.
