The leaders of the state's three Minnesota's major political parties joined together Tuesday to encourage people to attend next week's precinct caucuses.
The chairs of the Democratic, Republican and Independence parties said the caucuses are grass roots politics at their best because they give everyone a chance to weigh in on the political process.
"These caucuses allow average people to come out and have a great say not only in the platform of their respective parties, but also in the nomination and selection of candidates which will be endorsed at our respective conventions," said DFL Chairman Ken Martin.
The caucuses are especially important now when well-funded special interest groups exert so much influence over politics, he added.
Republican caucus-goers this year will vote in non-binding straw polls to give an early indication of who they like in the races for governor and U.S. senator.
"You don't realize until you do it that you really can have a voice and that you really can make a difference," said Republican Party Chair Keith Downey. "I would just encourage people to attend caucuses with the party of their choice on Feb. 4."
