Union Depot gets Megabus – now, it just needs trains

Megabus, known for its dirt-cheap fares to cities like Chicago, will start picking up riders at downtown St. Paul's fancy Union Depot transit hub tomorrow.

The move was supposed to happen today, but it was pushed back because of weather.

Megabus joins Jefferson Lines and MetroTransit buses, which already provide service to Union Depot. Now, all the beautifully renovated train station needs is some trains.

Amtrak was originally supposed to move downtown when the $243 million restoration was completed in 2012. But passenger trains can't start using the tracks until freight carrier BNSF completes some upgrades to its equipment in the area, Ramsey County Regional Rail Authority spokeswoman Deborah Carter McCoy said.

McCoy expects Amtrak will move to the Depot by the end of March, but there's no date-certain, yet. Green Line light rail trains start rolling June 14.
